Beneath the glitz and glamour of beauty contests is a world of irony and criticism that comes to light in the MissSeafood series. These works are not only a fun, ironic look at idealized beauty standards, but also an uncompromising reflection on how this industry shapes our understanding of femininity and self-worth.
In these trying times of conflict and war, we all long all for something or someone to give us support and hope. The Nightmare Eaters were created to ease our suffering relief by eating our nachmerries. But for the creatures themselves, this process is not without consequences and is devastating.
“Marta Volkova and Slava Shevelenko were born in the Soviet Union, that distant land that seems to exist only in history books – if it ever existed – and all their work seems to stem from this legendary beginning. In the age of fabulators, perverse mechanics of alternative facts and malicious fake news fakers, Marta and Slava as storytellers (…) Their rich, multifaceted projects like to explore the boundaries between reality and fiction. They use subjects from collective mythology – the Yeti, the so-called Tunguska meteorite in Siberia – which they intertwine with moral, social, philosophical or political metaphors that in turn resonate with the reality of today’s world.” Yves Randaxhe (art historian
and curator of the Art Collection National Bank of Belgium)
