Carlos Puyol – The colors of Jazz

¨The Colors of Jazz¨, is Carlos Puyol’s first solo exhibition in the Netherlands. On Friday, March 10th, 20.00 hrs. the show opens in presence of the artist. The exhibition will continue until the 7th of May at the Oranjeplein 203 in Maastricht

As very well stated by Emile Hollman in his introduction of the catalogue fort his exhibition: The paintings first find their form in drawings in the artist’s substantial, rectangular sketchbooks, and then become alive when the artist lets in the jazz and starts coloring, cleaning, stripping, blowing and erasing. Jazz in paint, yes, he can live by that metaphor, captured in his abstract still-lifes.

The subtlety of paper, wintershow 2016

Je suis en présence de toi, watercolour on paper, 15 x 15 cm from Anet Duncan. A new work on paper representing the essence of the exhibition well: the subtlety of paper. In this winter exhibition at PontArte many works from many artists with a common underground: paper.

From the 11th of December till the 22nd of January 2017 at the Oranjeplein 203 in Maastricht: the subtlety of paper

Paper is often seen as vulnerable, light sensitive and off less value than works on panel or canvas, but on the other hand the medium asks for a careful way of working, with each mistake made visible and difficult to correct. The surface is mat, the fragility of the paper and the in this exhibition often small format, makes of works on paper very special artworks. Not the big eyecatchers to impress, but it forces to look in more detail and admire the work in an intimate setting.

The thought behind the exhibition in this holiday season is to offer a wide variety of works from a large number of artists, so it is easy to find a nice gift. The offer ranges from landscapes to abstracts on rice paper and from small to large.

Some highlights:

New watercolours from Anet Duncan (South Africa), small format, beautifully framed ask for an intimate look.

Work from Mario Pasqualotto (Spain) , Fragile from the series the 72 names of God.

Works from Mario Pasqualotto are also shown at the Museum aan het Vrijthof at the LUMA exhibition

We open the exhibition on the 11th of December at 14.30 hrs till 17.00 hrs. You are all invited to visit us. After the 11th the works can be seen on appointment till the 22nd of January 2017.

Marc Prat; Incarnation

¨Incarnation¨, the first solo show of Marc Prat in the Netherlands can be viewed at PontArte Maastricht from the 22nd of October until the 4th of December 2016.

Marc Prat, a Spanish artist from Mataró, near Barcelona, paints with an austere pallet on canvas and paper. His work is figurative, but doesn´t reflect reality. It is an inner search translated in series of church and Cloister interiors, Masks and animals which have a high emotional impact when looking at them. For the first time his work is to be seen in a solo show in Maastricht. The 22nd of October the exhibition opens, in the presence of Marc Prat at PontArte in Maastricht.

Marc Prat started painting when he was 24 years old, encouraged by his mother, Rosa Codina-Esteve, Art professor at the University of Barcelona. In Marc’s work we see the same colours and techniques his mother uses, but were her work is abstract, Marc work is figurative.

His topics are mostly spiritual, but without becoming religious. He finds his inspiration in different cultures and believes. In his cloisters and churches, you feel the spirituality of Christianity and the works absorb you standing in front of them. In other series, like ¨Teotihuacan¨ and ¨Kashi¨ you see faces or masks that express serenity and calmness. By looking at these works you see a depth and stillness that forces you to reflect.

From the 22nd of October till the 4th of December : ¨incarnation¨, recent work of Marc Prat, Oranjeplein 203, Maastricht

Marc will also join is at the Affordable Art Fair in Amsterdam from the 27th until the 30th of October, we can be found at stand D5.

For this exhibition we made a catalogue. It is available at PontArte for 10 €  and a limited signed edition is available on Artsper for 15,- €.

Green in Art

To open the new season in a fresh way, this time no solo show from one artist but a number of works selected around 1 theme:

“Green in art”

It is a selection of works in which the colour green is dominant. For some artists and viewers it has a direct relationship to nature and landscapes, For others it is the colour of hope.

Or, in the words of Wikipedia:
“Green associates with fresh and cool, with nature. For some it is the colour of hope and peace.”

Opening: Saturday afternoon September 10th, 16.00 hrs at the Oranjeplein 203, Maastricht. As always with drinks and some bites and lively conversations about Green!

In the Spotlight

In the spotlight: a new item where we explain 1 work from 1 artist:
The first time we look at a photo made by Jennifer Owens and that I first say in 2012 at Galerie Trama in Barcelona.

It is a photograph in which you see 3 men. They seem to be fishermen but you aren´t sure. They seem to come from a past time and takes you back to another world of old photographs, maybe seen at a grandparents’ home. To me it it lets me think of paintings from the ¨Haagse School¨. The intention from Jennifer Owens with these small photographs is that you try to see what it is you see and that brings back memories. This makes this Photograph and the series it is from so intriguing. The edition of the photograph is 5, of which 3 are still available and 1 belongs to the collection of Banc Sabadell.

Her work isn´t shouting for attention, it is work for the person who takes the time to discover.

Currently work from Jennifer Owens can be seen in Denmark where she is part of the JCE, a biennale traveling 9 countries in the next 2 years.
